The
Truth about Colossus
Colossus is software licensed to over 30 insurance
companies to aid in predicting the settlement value of injury claims.
An insurance adjuster inputs data about a claim into their computer, and
Colossus calculates a range of values for the claim's worth. For example,
if you suffered a strained back, broken leg, or facial injury, the Colossus
program can evaluate your injuries and produce a recommended settlement
price.
So what’s the problem? The problem is that a
computer cannot compute human pain and suffering. The software does
not consider interference with normal life activities, emotional distress,
or other valid indications of pain and suffering normally proved by lay
testimony instead of medical testimony (as required by Colossus). In
addition, the software is only as good as the data input, and we never know
what exactly the adjuster has input.
Despite lawsuits against insurance companies for using
Colossus, the companies continue to use the software to value claims.
They claim that the program is only used as a beginning point for claim
value. However, as reported in the Seattle PI, several insurance
agents reported that Colossus is not merely a beginning point, but is
instead the final word on value that the insurance adjuster has to adhere
to, or else risk unfavorable management reviews (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/122047_colossusside15.html).
Colossus is a well-kept secret by the insurance
companies that use it, and they will likely not tell you if they have
licensed the software. It is the market leader bodily injury
claims-handling software used by an increasing number of insurance
companies in the world. To see if your insurance company is using
Colossus, please click here (http://www.settlementcentral.com/format.php?Page=8002).
